For Ages:
18 mos. to 2 yrs.
Purpose:
We are trying to develop muscles in their upper arms and hands. This will help their gross and fine motor skills.

Materials:
1 new rectangular sponge cut in half
1 highchair tray or cookie sheet with sides on it
Warm water

Instructions:
The sponge should be small enough to fit into your child’s hands. Make sure the highchair tray or cookie sheet is clean. Give your child the sponge moderately damp. Encourage your child to wipe the tray with the sponge using a whole arm motion. This should be fun. Most enjoy rubbing the tray and playing with water.
You can also encourage them to wring the water out of the sponge. That twisting action strengthens those hands. They will then want to wipe the water up with the sponge. Of course the process is then repeated again and again.
The child may sit in the chair and play with the sponge. This may give parents a little extra time to finish their meal.
